Calling absolute beginners and the established enthusiast; learn, improve skills or master a new approach - from new binding to repair & restoration techniques; incorporating fine design binding and many associated disciplines. Whatever your level of ability, a personally tailored one-to-one approach is available that will yield good results working at your own pace step-by-step. 

Alternatively, there are one, two and five day courses accommodating a group of three students, and the opportunity to work within a relaxed but focused learning environment.

Materials, bespoke handouts and refreshments are included.

Courses gather at 9am for a 9:30 start, breaking for lunch at 12:30 - 2pm, finishing at 5 - 5:30pm.

Bookbinding: An Introduction - Absolute Beginners / Refresher

Learn about elements of the book; the mysteries of grain direction; materials and essential tools to get you started on your Bookbinding odyssey. Two projects will be completed on this one day taster course.

Basic Bookbinding: Advanced - a follow on

Following on from the introductory course. Here we will achieve two multi-section sewn bindings, and experience hand tooling with gold foil.

Advanced Bookbinding: A Progression - Intermediates / Improvers

This course is aimed at those with good experience of basic bookbinding technique. Topics covered will be Quarter and/or Half Leather binding; leather paring (with a machine, spokeshave and knife), hand-sewn silk (head)end-bands, made endpapers and board attachment.

Design Bookbinding: An Exploration - Intermediates / Advanced Masterclass’

Free your creative side taking Bookbinding into the sphere of art. This course shall concentrate on paper decoration; edge decoration; double (head)end-banding; leather dying techniques; leather as decoration (onlay, inlay, sanded, puckered, relief etc); unconventional tooling with gold and coloured foil- a time to unleash ones imagination. 

(5 Day course) £500 Ind. £340 PPG

Give your old books new life

Repair & Restoration - Intermediates / Improvers 

Covering topics such as - the safe dis-binding of a book; paper/page repairs; joint tacketing; colour matching techniques when retaining original boards for cloth and leather rebacking; cleaning and polishing methods.
